Les Bourgeois Wine, and Small town Rocheport

Friday, August 27th, 2010

It started with a photo shoot or two.  My awesome cooperating teacher from my student teaching days wanted me to take pictures of her adorable 5 year old daughter Stella.  I was all, absolutely, but they live in Fulton.  2 hours away, in our old college town.  But another client wanted to do pics in St. Louis as well, so I planned on stopping in Fulton taking pics and then driving to St. Louis  for another shoot.  Then we would get to see Jon’s fam.  Perfect right?  Not quite my St. Louis client had to reschedule due to unexpected business travel, so I was going to have to reschedule  Kara’s shoot as well.  I was disappointed with a capital D.  Whenever something disappointing or discouraging comes up I try to turn it into something even better.  So I thought hmmm…and then it hit me, Jon and I hadn’t celebrated our anniversary, in fact, we hadn’t had alone time in FOREVER.  We constantly joke about the date night that never seems to happen.  So I decided to book a b and b in small town Rocheport and enjoy an afternoon sipping wine at the A frame at Les Bourgeois winery.  The day was even more perfect than originally planned.  I love when something expected turns into something wonderfully unexpected.  Perfection with a capital P.

I hope that after seeing the pics you are excited to take your own trip to little Rocheport where the wine goes down easy and the light is always golden.  Let me tell you more about my day.

At about noon after scoping out some great spots we started our shoot with the Wagner clan.  They are a happy bunch and Stella is about as photogenic as they get.  Here are just a few from our shoot.  I really couldn’t pick because there were somewhere around 60 perfect pictures!  But here are some favs, maybe later I’ll post the rest on a slide show.

Stella wasn’t afraid to work it.  No coaching was involved.  This little one is oozing with confidence.  Hold on to it girl, you rock!

For sure Daddy’s little girl.   Stella adores Jason

I just love it when kids do there thing.  I’m just happy I had my camera ready to capture this Stella moment!

If you know Stella this is her smile, warm and radiant.  She doesn’t mess around with grumpy.

PS her toenails are purple too!  LOVE IT!  Sparkly purple toes are pretty close to perfection.

Kara and Stella have such a bond.  I just know they’ll always be close.

Stella was amazing the whole time, but I think by the time we were done she was pooped, but still smiling!  Sometimes ya just gotta lay on a log.

I’m so happy we made this happen.  Kara your family is great and I look forward to more pics with Stella in the future!

After the shoot we headed back to Rocheport for some much needed down time.  Of course I took my camera, even though Jon probably wouldn’t have minded my leaving it in the car.  I had to play with my new lens.  Here are some pics I got.  Ahh it’s relaxing thinking about it. :)

Les Bourgeois is a fun winery and if you’re ever driving through the state it’s worth a stop off.  You can sit under a tree at a picnic table high on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri river, drinking wine and eating cheese.

I love my hot hubby’s mug!  He has a great looking smirk.

My favorite summer wine.  Sweet and refreshing.

After we checked into our little B and B,  Jon needed a nap and I needed to catch some of this light before it was gone.  So I took off down the street of this small town.  The whole town is only a few blocks.

Rocheport isn’t on the bluffs like the winery, it’s down in the valley, right by the river.  So the evening light comes in and fills the valley with this gooey golden light that makes everything look amazing.  Even old chairs.

Everything in Rocheport is quaint and middle America.  I wish I could have seen the town in it’s booming railroad days.  The railroad tracks are now a part of the 225 mile Katy Trail.  You can walk it or bike it.  I would love to go back and bike it this fall when the leaves are changing colors.  There is an old railroad tunnel that totally gave me the creepers.  I felt so unsafe walking through it.  Obviously there isn’t tracks, so no train was going to come through, but it sure felt like it.  I regret not getting a picture of it.

This is our bed and breakfast.  The Schoolhouse was built in 1914, but you would never know.  The owners have done a fabulous job of keeping it up, and thinking of every little detail to make the stay memorable.  The bed was great, the heart shaped jacuzzi was better, and I loved the breakfast.  We will definitely come back for another stay in a different room.

Old is cool!

I didn’t get a pic of Abigail’s but I want to give them a shout out for the great meal.  It’s the only place to eat on a Sunday evening, but I would go back any day of the week.  Everything was made fresh, in fact, the menu was on a white board with things scratched out as they ran out.  And our dessert menu was handed to us on an index card.

This is one of the most perfect spots for pictures the light was gorgeous.  I told Jon we had to take a pic.  So I se my camera up on a gate and focused and hoped for the best.  I really want someone to get married in Rocheport so we can do pics here!!

Jon and I had a great time, but I’m ready to go back.  There’s something appealing about the simple life of a small town.

Non-Thanksgiving Thanks?

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

I know it’s not Thanksgiving or anything, but every now and then a little soft spot in my heart cries out thank you, thank you, and insists on being heard.  And I’m getting so close to my gallery opening, and it’s 2 in the morning, and who really thinks clearly at 2 in the morning anyway.

So here goes.

Thank you Jon for giving so much of your free time to this gallery opening.  You have totally revamped my website, designed a poster for the sign outside the door, and you read all my crazy text about each piece, even though you lived it.  Being supportive isn’t always easy, but you make it look like it is.  And sorry for not putting the computer down tonight when you were dancing around the living room trying to get my attention.  I should have stopped and danced with you.

Thank you Cara for being the most supportive friend I have!  You helped me pick out pics, talked strategy until you were blue in the face, and helped me put together matted pics even when I didn’t ask.  Oh and you’re going to help with wine and sales the night of.  (you probably didn’t know that one yet) I don’t know where I would be without you.  I guess I need to also thank Ian in advance for filming the event.  Ian you’re a cool guy and I’m really happy Cara is marrying you.

Thank you Justin for helping with sound and video production.  You’ve been so awesome.  I can tell you care, and caring people are cool, especially caring people with a band.  http://www.guskc.com/ Thanks for letting me sing with you even though I can’t sing.  Next time it’s best to pick out a song that is mostly shouting.

Thank you to all the friends that reposted info about my gallery opening.  So many of you have shared the info with your friends on facebook.  I love you, love you for doing that.  And of course thank you for coming.  Especially my fam from the other side of the state!  Much love!!!

Let the countdown begin…

Oh and no post is complete without a pic.  Here’s another one that will be featured at the event this Friday.  It’s perfect for this post.

Purity

Big Dreams, and firsts for me.

Monday, July 26th, 2010

It’s so easy when you’re a kid to say that ya wanna do this, ya wanna do that, ya wanna change the world.   But something happens as we get older.  I think the world handicaps us with the agreements we start to make.  We start to think that only the beautiful, intelligent, super talented, and “special” people do those things the rest of us dream about.  I am just as guilty as the majority of the world, and every day I still battle those nasty agreements.  I call it head trash, but it really just boils down to excuses that keep me from feeling the guilt that follows failure.  I don’t know how far I’ve come, but I know every day I wake up and try to do something that brings me closer to my ultimate goals.  Slowly the little goals build until I am accomplishing a big goal.  My first art gallery opening is my second big goal!  Someday I hope it’s just one of those little goals, but for now, today, it’s big.   With this accomplishment comes more fear and head trash to boggle my mind.  Getting the gallery, and artwork together was easy.  Now I have to worry about how to get people to come, how much wine to buy,  what to wear, and how to be “that girl” you know the artist.  That last one makes me sweat.  Knowing I’ll be surrounded by my incredible, supportive friends eases the anxiety, but I’m still pretty sure I won’t sleep Thursday the 5th.  :)

I hope you can come out and enjoy the crazy festivities that we call “First Fridays” here in KC.  My signature pieces will be for sale, but I’ll also have smaller 8×10 and 5×7 prints for sale as well.    The gallery is just a few doors down form Lulu’s noodle house, I’ll have a sign out front.  Come by and say hi,  get a glass of wine, and maybe even find something that will look good on your wall.  Oh, and please invite your friends, remember that little bit of head trash I mentioned a second ago.

I can’t wait to see you Friday the 6th.  :)

5 fabs and 5 drabs

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Every now and then I open my eyes and realize all kind of craziness is happening around me.  I mean seriously fabulous things, and seriously drab things.  So I decided every now and then I should document these monumental moments in my life.  Ok mostly not monumental, but still important.  Somewhat important anyway.  Here are my 5 fabs for the week…

*Went to lunch at Gingers on the square in Liberty.  Good food, and better company.  Thanks Jamie.

*Played 4 hours of tennis!

*Went to the Designer showhouse.  Favorite one in years!

*Discovered my new favorite snack.  A flat wrap with Mozzarella and salami microwave for a few secs.  Just a little party in my mouth.

And the fab of the week… drum roll xmas vacation style please…

*My dad washed my car for me!  Inside and out!!!  YAY!

And sadly enough my 5 drabs…

*Lost was a rerun.

*Layla woke up in the middle of the night and puked yellow stuff on the floor, what a treat.

*The people racing on I-70.  Scary.

*Hitting myself in the eye with my tennis raquet.  I’ll only say this once if you ask or notice my bump I will tell you Jon threw his raquet and hit me.

*Got peed on in a shoot this weekend by a newborn.  I will say this one is funny.  The little guy peed 3 times during our shoot one of which was on me.  I do love my job!

Looking over this list I realize most of this happened this weekend. I am a busy girl, but I had a lot of fun doing what I do!  I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Lots of love!!!!!

Al

PS  If you’re having Monday blues just think it could look like this outside!  Just a few short months ago it did!

Ahhh… Looking at these pictures makes me so happy to be alive!  Today is was sunny, 70 and flawless in KC.  A perfect day for something outside.

Everglades ~ Photos of the natural reserve and some GATORS

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I love traveling!  I love taking pictures of my traveling.  In fact travel photography is probably my big passion.

Jon and I went to south Florida for a spring break this year!  Everyone with me now ahhhhh…..  Ah is right, we stayed with my best friend and little sis Maggie!  Mags is a photographer as well.  She does amazing work and I know those of you that have followed my blog for awhile have heard me talk about her alot.  I encourage you to check out her work if you have the chance.  She’s the best wedding photographer in the world and was recently choosen as one of the top 10 wedding photographers in south Florida.  She is a real inspiration to me. www.maggiestolzberg.com Anyway enough talking about the amazing, loving, perfect mags, let me tell you about the pics.

Of course we picked the gloomiest day to go south, but the treat of continued rain the rest of the week  pushed us to go when we did.  As it turned out we had happy Florida sun almost every day.

Jon and I took an airboat ride.  It was awesome.  http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2819920-miccosukee_indian_village_airboat_rides_miami-i For only 12 dollars we got a loud, fast and fun airboat ride.  If you don’t mind the cotton balls, and the fact that the guide can’t speak english, it’s the best.  We saw a ton of gators.  I got some crazy pics of a few.  Just wait, it’s kinda scary.  Maybe I should put one of those warnings on here.  Ok here it is!

Yup that was a for real sign.  They have to tell people not to touch them!  I think those people might be me.  Just wait.

During our boat ride we made a stop off at this worn out old dock.  They told us to roam around.  I’m not going to lie, the thought that this was some sort of dirty trick did cross my mind.  I thought maybe that’s how the Native Americans kept the gators happy.  Tourists as gator food.  We walked around and saw some gators.  smile!  If you think it looks like it might fall apart you’re not seeing things, I thought that too.

Here she is, and yes I’m using a zoom, but still leaning out over the rickedy planks to get an unobstructed shot.  NOW that I look at these pics I’m not thinking it was the smartest thing I’ve ever done.  If my memory serves me right I think I remember in the crockodile hunter that they can be real fast and snappy.  Maybe gators are more laid back, look at this next pic.

She was sleepy..

I know close right.  I didn’t even crop this.  ahhhh.  Look at that skin.  Makes you want to reach out and touch it right?  Jon had to tell me to step away from the gator.

This big girl was actually about 10 feeet long.  I told Jon to put a hand out so we could get perspective, but he wouldn’t.  Silly boy.

And then this was at the backside of the dock.  Maybe you have an answer?

Here’s goober one and goober two.  We always manage to look so cool in our pictures.  I just don’t know how we do it.  haha!

If you made it this far thanks for reading or looking.  I would love to hear your gator stories.  YOU know you’ve got them!
